Sports Illustrated's Pete Thamel took a much-needed break from glorifying online relationships between two Samoan dudes to weigh in on the recruitment of Andrew Wiggins.
Right now many of you are asking, "Well, why do I give a flying Dirk Minniefield about anything Pete Thamel writes about Andrew Wiggins?" And that's a very fair question. But here's an excerpt from the article anyway:
Multiple people around Wiggins hinted that there's a chance he'd choose Florida State, where both his parents attended, for a more low key college experience. Fulford said that Huntington Prep played six games in the state of Kentucky this year and drew nearly 35,000 people total in those games.
"We played in North Carolina, we had seven or eight people in Carolina shirts," Fulford said, noting that North Carolina and Kansas are also suitors for Wiggins. "We're in Kentucky and we've sold out three 6,000 seat gyms. They're crazy. They're crazy in a good way. They show how much they want you. It's overwhelming. He just hates attention."
This could be the first time the spotlight at Kentucky has had a negative impact on a player's recruitment, although I believe the family ties are what's really pushing him towards Tallahassee.
Don't sleep on Calipari and Kentucky, though. Not yet. At the end of the day, it's about what place is best for the recruit's future, and Florida State doesn't hold a candle to the opportunities Coach Cal creates in Lexington. Wiggins would be crazy to play in Tallahassee, where he'll draw double and triple-teams every night. He'd get buckets at UK in a balanced offense while developing his game in practice against top talent everyday.
