The Cleveland Indians are now the Cleveland Guardians
Cleveland’s baseball team will be now known as the Guardians. This morning, the club announced it is changing its name from the Indians to the Guardians after decades of criticism from Native Americans. The new moniker, which will go into effect after the 2021 season, was revealed in a video narrated by Tom Hanks.

Why the Guardians? The name refers to the large art deco Guardians of Traffic statues on the Hope Memorial Bridge outside Progressive Field that connects Cleveland’s west side to the east side.
For all the uninformed people, there is massive Cleveland Guardian statues that are meant to protect the city. You see them as you enter the city, that’s the reason for Guardians pic.twitter.com/XyhKWOGNsn
