There’s no denying the success of the first six seasons of the John Calipari era. From 2009-15, the Cats won a national championship and four SEC Tournaments and went to four Final Fours. The 2014-15 team came painfully close to becoming the first undefeated team in college basketball since Bobby Knight’s 1976 Indiana squad. For those first six years, Kentucky was elite.
From there? Things slowed down a touch. KSR videographer Steven Peake is spending his offseason looking back at John Calipari’s 15 seasons at Kentucky. A few weeks ago, he recapped the golden years from 2009-15. In part two, he covers 2015-2020. With the help of his grandfather’s notebooks, Peake examines Calipari’s “good, not great” years, which ended with the SEC and NCAA Tournaments being canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
As you’ll see (and surely remember), that part of the Cal era was also hugely significant for our friends down I-64 at Louisville. Consider it the golden era of Louisville scandal, with such hits as Katina Powell and the prostitutes, the FBI’s pay-for-play investigation, and Tom Jurich and Rick Pitino being fired.
