The Louisville accent's Friday News and Views
I regularly read the blog Gawker and they recently started a bracket for America’s Ugliest Accent. Naturally, I checked it out, and was shocked to see that the Louisville accent was on the list as an 11-seed. Huh?? Boston, Chicago, Scranton, Philadelphia, sure. But Louisville?! Although I’m from Danville, I consider the two accents practically the same (Louisville may be a tiny bit less southern), and in my opinion, quite beautiful. Not so much to Gawker. They pitted the Louisville accent against the Providence accent in the bracket, with this description:
Louisville
Jennifer Lawrence, America’s sweetheart, went straight from Louisville, Ky. to Hollywood, and has since dropped the handsome round mumbling of Loo-ah-vul. According to a study performed at the University of Kentucky, the Louisville accent borders somewhere between being non-Southern and non-Northern, but is defined by that hard-to-understand Southern style grumbling.
Seed: 11 Notable Louisville accents: Jennifer Lawrence (sort of), Hunter S. Thompson, Thomas Edison Example sentence: “There ees, accordin’ to lehgend, a boilin pot of gold at one eend.”
There’s also a video of Jake the Louisvillian talking about his accent, but I couldn’t get past the first ten seconds, because although he claims he is from Louisville, Jake doesn’t say the word “Louisville” like a Louisvillian at all:
I mean, it’s Luhl-ah-vul, right? These people at a Luhl-ah-vul Dairy Queen know:
Regardless, head on over to Gawker to defend the Louisville accent. Thankfully, an overwhelming majority of people think Providence’s is way more offensive. Rightly so. Now read the news and views in your best Louisville accent.
Stoops says the team is “locked in” and “ready to go”
Mark Stoops was upbeat after practice on Thursday, telling reporters his team is ready for South Carolina. “Really good practice yesterday, good energy, good focus. Wrapped it up with a light practice today,” Stoops said. “Guys were sharp. Looking forward to Saturday. Guys are locked in and ready to go. So, we’re anticipating a big day.”
While Stoops said UK is “a long way” from talking about being in the SEC East race, he said if the Cats upset the Gamecocks, then they might be in the discussion. “If you take care of your business then we can have that conversation as we move forward,” Stoops said. “But we’re a long way from there. We’re still taking it one day at a time, one game at a time.”
The South Carolina game is almost sold out
According to Guy on the Corner Tickets, only 300 tickets remained for the South Carolina game as of 2 p.m. Thursday. Those of you going, take a black coat. Not only is it supposed to be chilly (dipping into the upper 30’s for lows), UK is calling for a blackout. For those of you complaining that black isn’t one of our school colors, Damien Harris seems pretty excited about it:
I need a black UK shirt for the game Friday! #BlackOut #BBN ⚫️⚫️⚫️

And that’s what matters. Speaking of, I need to watch this again:
The Gamecocks are only favored by by 3.5 now
Once a 10-point favorite, South Carolina is only favored by 3.5 points in some Las Vegas sportsbooks. That is a ridiculous swing, and telling of the momentum surrounding the program. Vegas likes the Cats to keep is close, and I like them to pull off the upset.

Was Randall Cobb’s touchdown tonight a good omen?
In the first quarter of Green Bay’s win over Minnesota, Cobb burned former South Carolina defensive back Captain Munnerlyn for a touchdown. Foreshadowing, anyone?

Skal Labissiere says he’s going to announce his decision in “about a month”
On Thursday, the 7′ Haitian tweeted that he will make his college decision “in about a month.” Memphis, Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Baylor are all in the running, with Memphis considered the frontrunner. The Cats may have made up a lot of ground during Skal’s official visit to Lexington in September, but Memphis is still an 85% favorite in his Crystal Ball.
Coach Cal sent an autographed picture to Toby Foster
And now, for an update to a story we shared with you earlier this week. 10-year-old Toby Foster is a huge UK fan diagnosed with mitochondrial disease, which makes life for him and his mother, Amy, pretty tough. Toby is actually Jared Lorenzen’s cousin, and because he loves his mom so much, he wrote John Calipari a letter to ask him to make sure his mother had a good time at the Women’s Clinic this past Sunday. The story got even better yesterday when Toby opened the mail and saw this autographed picture from Calipari:
Predictably, Toby was ecstatic, proudly showing his mother “It even says my name! Coach Cal wrote MY name!”. Good on ya, Cal.
KSR will be live from the Cats’ Den at the UK Student Center in the morning to give away a trip to the Champions Classic
Matt and Ryan will do Friday’s show live from the Cats Den in the UK Student Center. They’ll also be giving away a trip to Indianapolis to watch UK and Kansas in the Champions Classic to one lucky student. The trip includes tickets and a hotel room, so stop by to enter, and don’t forget your college ID (all college students are welcome, not just UK). They’ll pick the winner at noon.
See you then…
