Lee Stewart, the man behind the popular @NotJerryTipton Twitter account, passed away over the weekend. He was 52.
Stewart launched the parody account in 2010 to mock Jerry Tipton, the longtime UK basketball beat writer for the Lexington Herald-Leader, but over time the account shifted from Tipton imitations to roasting Kentucky’s basketball rivals, mostly Louisville, Indiana, UNC and Duke. The account grew to 77,000 followers over its 10-year existence, and in its earlier years Stewart even brought his humor here to Kentucky Sports Radio for ‘Not Jerry Tipton’s Friday Basketball Notebook,’ a weekly long-form version of his tweets.
When he wasn’t tweeting, Stewart worked as an attorney in Birmingham, where he lived with his wife and three young girls. Our condolences to them and everyone who knew him.
Very sorry to see reports that “Not Jerry Tipton” has died. He was Lee Stewart, a 1992 UK grad who was an attorney in Birmingham, Ala. condolences to his family.
