The Sklar Brothers' Thursday News and Views

Our friends Jason and Randy Sklar just released a new comedy special, What Are We Talking About?, a one-hour stand-up routine full of laughs that I really think you'll enjoy. It comes with its own NFL-like pregame/halftime/postgame studio show, featuring host Rich Eisen and a panel of Omar Dorsey, Dwight Freeney and Terrell Thomas. Bonnie Bernstein is the field reporter, handling the interviews with the twins in their locker room prior to taking the stage. The studio analysis is a first for a comedy special, as far as I know, and really adds to what the Sklars bring during their routine. We got a chance to catch some of the material at Comedy Off Broadway last fall when the Sklars visited Lexington and the laughs were just as good the second time around when I watched What Are We Talking About? on Netflix over the weekend. I won't spoil any of the bits for you, but I will say they have a surprisingly good impersonation of Stephen A. Smith, which may be my favorite part of the show. That bit alone is worth giving it a shot. And in case you missed it, the Sklar brothers were guests on Kentucky Sports Radio this morning to discuss what it was like seeing their Michigan Wolverines lose to Kentucky in the NCAA tournament and to congratulate Big Blue Nation on the return of the Harrison twins and Pat Riley. Let's get to these News and Views... ***** Southern Miss makes a hire, it's not Kenny Payne. Iowa State assistant Doc Sadler will replace Donnie T in Hattiesburg, meaning we get to keep Kenny Payne in Lexington a little longer. A fun Sadler fact: he replaced Billy Gillispie at UTEP after serving as his assistant for two seasons. He was also the head man at Nebraska before coaching under the Mayor at Iowa State. Mark Stoops feels good about his options at quarterback but not ready to name a starter. On Wednesday morning's SEC coaches teleconference, Mark Stoops addressed his quarterback race, saying he likes his options but still doesn't have the guy. Patrick Towles played well as the starter in the spring game, but he also liked what he saw from Reese Phillips and Drew Barker that afternoon. He said Phillips is the most consistent of the bunch and is "very much in the hunt." Stoops also had very good things to say about his defensive line. That group will be the difference maker on that side of the ball, no doubt. Calipari met with his team on Monday. Coach Cal announced via Twitter on Wednesday that he met with his team earlier in the week. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss what each player needs to improve over the summer and the vision for the entire squad in 2014-15. Cal also said he finally sat down with Marcus Lee, Derek Willis, Dominique Hawkins, and E.J Floreal individually for the first time since the season ended. "I am totally dedicated to each of these young men," he wrote. "I believe in them and I’m committed to doing the best for them as individuals as we build this team into something we can all be proud of." The Lakers need a head coach. Mike D'Antoni resigned on Wednesday, paving the way for John Cali... Kidding. Kentucky football added a walk-on. Ryan Kendall, a quarterback/wide receiver out of North Carolina, has accepted a preferred walk-on spot with the Cats. One would assume they will give him some run at receiver, a position that needs depth, which could pave the way for a bigger commitment on down the road. Ryan's younger brother Austin is a highly sought-after quarterback in the class of 2016 with offers from Tennessee, Clemson and UK. 247Sports ranks Austin as the eight-best quarterback in the class and the Cats' offer has to stand out a little more now that his big brother will be wearing blue in Lexington next fall. Nice recruiting move by Stoops and, who knows, maybe Ryan can offer some help of his own. Stephen Zimmerman trimmed his list to eights, Cats still alive. Days after playing in front of John Calipari and Barry Rohrssen in Sacramento, Stephen Zimmerman announced his top eight schools on Wednesday and Kentucky survived the cut. One of the top players in the 2015 class, Zimmerman has received interest from everywhere and UK has made at least three trips out to Las Vegas to see him since offering him a scholarship last summer. At 6'11'', Zimmerman is 247Sports.com's No. 2 center in the class and the fifth best player overall. He is also considering Arizona, UNLV, Kansas, North Carolina, UCLA, Louisville and, for reasons beyond me, Indiana. Myles Turner is going to Texas. The Kentucky softball team picked up a two-game season sweep over the Cards with a 7-3 win in Louisville.
