There are police scandals, and then there's the sex scandal that went down at the Frankfort Police Department

From time to time, certain stories come across my news feed that seem right out of a cop drama; this is one of them. According to The State Journal, on Friday, Franklin Circuit Judge Phillip Shepherd chastised the Frankfort Police Department for a pattern of unethical behavior, sexual misconduct and lack of supervision in a 2015 homicide investigation. The whole story is pretty complicated, but the basic gist of it is the Frankfort Police Department hired 28-year-old Meisha Nichols to be an informant, and while employed, she engaged in a sexual relationship with Frankfort detective Bobby Courtney. Nichols claims the department knew about the relationship and, after putting her up in a hotel for two nights, arranged for her to stay with 66-year-old Thomas Ellison, who had a history of violence against women. The Frankfort police department decided to stop using Nichols as an informant, and a sometime later, Ellison was found dead in his apartment. Nichols and her ex-boyfriend Cameron Wright were arrested and Nichols was charged with murder, while the ex was charged with theft. Because of the history between Nichols and Courtney, prosecutors offered Nichols a plea deal to a lesser charge. While Courtney denies the relationship, the court has a bevy of documents proving it existed, including nude pictures, text messages, and inappropriate Facebook postings.
