WATCH: Tim Couch and Chris Stapleton's 1995 gridiron duel
It’s the first Friday of the high school football season and to celebrate, we’ve got quite a treat for you. In the 1990s, Tim Couch became a gridiron legend in Eastern Kentucky, lighting up fields for Leslie County. Another household name went head-to-head with Couch on more than one occasion: country music star Chris Stapleton.
Before he was a Grammy Award-winning musician, Stapleton played linebacker and running back for the Johnson Central Golden Eagles. Leslie County and Johnson Central played each other three times during Couch and Stapleton’s high school careers. Johnson Central won the first game, Leslie County the second. The rubber match took place in 1995 and was a game for the ages. Stapleton and Johnson Central held Leslie County scoreless until the final minutes of the fourth quarter, which is when Tim Couch went to work. Couch tied the game up and, after an interception (his fourth of the game), threw the game-winning touchdown to Ricky Hensley with only three seconds left.

Thanks to KSR fan Alex Green, we have highlights from that game, the perfect mood-setter for your Friday night. Stapleton is No. 33 in black, Couch No. 2 in white. Stapleton chases Couch all over the field, taking him down on multiple occasions, but it’s Couch that gets the last laugh.
