Region Championship round-up

All but one KHSAA Regional Championship was decided yesterday. If you missed any of the action, KSR has you covered! The 3rd Region title game between Owensboro Catholic and Muhlenberg County is scheduled for 3pm CT today.

Stoops lands big-time Corbin recruit

Earlier this weekend, Treyveon Longmire became the first in-state star to commit to Kentucky’s 2022 class.

A noted defensive back, wide receiver, running back, and kick/punt returner, the 4-star recruit does it all except sell popcorn at halftime for the Redhounds.

Longmire chose the Cats over the likes of West Virgina, Louisville, and Virginia Tech. What was the tipping point?

“Kentucky, they touched home with me. They’re like family, they keep in touch with me every day. That’s what I was looking for in a college. Kentucky has been the one that stuck out the most with that,” said Longmire.

Welcome to the team, Treyveon!

Remembering a UK legend

Former UK All-American Howard Schnellenberger, who played at Kentucky from 1952-56 and spent nearly 50 years coaching in college and in the NFL, died yesterday at the age of 87. Schnellenberger led the Wildcats in receiving during both the 1954 and 1955 seasons, coached his collegiate teams to a 6-0 bowl record, and won a national title with the Miami Hurricanes in 1983.

KSR remembered Schnellenberger’s legacy through a few different articles yesterday, including one about how Bear Bryant pried the Flaget High School star away from Indiana.

Rhyne Howard named a John Wooden finalist

For the second year in a row, Rhyne Howard’s been named a John Wooden All-American, an honor which automatically nominates her for the John Wooden Award.

In her junior season, Howard averaged 20.7 points and 7.3 rebounds per game, entering the NCAA Tournament as the only player in the nation averaging over 20 points per game with at least 7.3 rebounds per game, 50 steals and 70 assists. She hit a team-best 56 3-pointers and had 91 assists, 61 steals and 19 blocks. During her career as a Wildcat, she has scored 1,655 career points, the seventh most in UK history. She needs only 37 more to tie Maci Morris for sixth.

This honor is just the latest in what’s becoming quite an impressive resume for Howard.
