The college basketball transfer portal is officially open. We’ve seen some heavy player movement despite an ongoing NCAA Tournament. Kentucky is expected to again be an active shopper in the free agent market.

We’ve seen some early action from Mark Pope‘s staff in the transfer portal. The Wildcats landed their first commitment on Friday morning.

Tulane transfer Kam Williams is a Cat.

What will the American Athletic Conference transfer bring to the Kentucky roster in 2025-26? KSR’s Bio Blast is taking a closer look at Mark Pope’s first transfer addition.

True freshman starter at Tulane

Kam Williams starred at Lafayette (La.) Christian Academy where he led his team to the state quarterfinals as a senior. That prep career ended with Williams landing at Tulane. The in-state recruiting win became an instant starter for head coach Ron Hunter in New Orleans.

Williams played in 31 games for the Green Wave and made 27 starts. The 6-foot-8 and 190-pound rookie averaged 9.3 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 1.3 assists on .485/.412/.760 shooting splits on 32.4 minutes per game. The freshman played a massive role on a team that won 19 games before bowing out to Memphis in American Athletic Tournament semifinals. Williams had 16 points and eight rebounds in that one-point loss.

The contributor immediately entered the transfer portal after the season ended before committing to Kentucky. Florida, Louisville, Baylor, Texas, LSU, Texas Tech, Arkansas and USC were also involved in this transfer recruitment.

3 & D wing

The SEC is arguably the most athletic league in basketball outside of the NBA. Mark Pope’s first staff got a full taste of that this season. Finding more length and athleticism without sacrificing too much shooting is likely a big emphasis for the program this offseason.

Kam Williams helps check that box. The Tulane transfer is a big wing with the 3-and-D skill set that is so valuable in modern basketball.

Williams poured in 41.2 percent of his three-point attempts at Tulane on 4.6 attempts per game. These were good efficiency numbers on good volume. The young wing played some at the three and four for the Green Wave. There was shot blocking (35 blocks), steals (46), and decent defensive rebounding (13% defensive rebound percentage) shown in year one.

This is a high-level athlete who can potentially guard multiple position at a high-level to go along with the shooting. This what the NBA — and Kentucky — are looking for on the wing.

Advanced Stat Profile: Kam Williams

Let’s take a closer look the numbers that Kam Williams posted in 2025.

StatRanking
Effective Field Goal Percentage60.5% (No. 76 nationally)
True Shooting Percentage61.4% (No. 130 nationally)
Two-Point Field Goal Percentage62.3% (No. 136 nationally)
Fouls Drawn Per 40 Minutes5.7 (No. 48 nationally)

Kam Williams had 66.2 percent of his shot attempts come from three but the wing was a very effective two-point scorer. The young player brings a fun skill set on defense due to his length but this was a very efficient scorer for Tulane. Williams gave the Green Wave some spacing but also drew a high rate of fouls and was very effective from inside the two-point line.

The young player has a solid foundation to build from on both ends. Williams looks like a future NBA Draft pick.
