Transfer Portal Bio Blast: Jaland Lowe

The college basketball transfer portal is officially open. We’ve seen some heavy player movement despite an ongoing NCAA Tournament. Kentucky is expected to again be an active shopper in the free agent market.
Mark Pope and his coaching staff are in the market for a starting point guard. With Donovan Dent (New Mexico to UCLA) and Silas Demary Jr. (Georgia to UConn) each off the board, some more names are emerging. The Wildcats made a trip to Minneapolis on Wednesday to see another lead guard candidate before the dead period arrived.
The Cats have entered the chat for Pittsburgh transfer Jaland Lowe.
The 6-foot-3 guard from Texas spent two seasons at Pittsburgh before entering the transfer portal on April 1. The lefty entered the portal with a “do not contact” tag. Does this mean that this recruitment will occur fast?
KSR’s Transfer Portal Bio Blast is taking a closer look at the junior with two years of eligibility remaining.
Late riser in the 2023 recruiting cycle
Jaland Lowe was a rarity in modern high school basketball in that he was a high major prospect who stayed at his high school. The guard was a three-year starter at Fort Bend Marshall in Greater Houston. As a senior, Lowe averaged 26.4 points, 8.1 rebounds, 4.3 assists, 3.1 steals, and 2.3 blocks as he led his team to 35 wins. The class of 2023 prospect was a Jordan Brand Classic selection.
A strong run on the Nike EYBL circuit the summer before his senior season ultimately made the prospect a legitimate power conference recruit. Lowe averaged 18 points, three rebounds, and five assists at the 2022 Peach Jam. The point guard was one of the best performers at the showcase event. A college decision was made less than three months later
Lowe ultimately picked Pittsburgh over SMU and Memphis in October of his senior year at Fort Bend Marshall.
High usage ACC point guard
As a true freshman at Pittsburgh in 2023-24, Jaland Lowe played in 33 games and earned 19 starting assignments. The rookie finished the season averaging 9.6 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 3.3 assists in 26.6 minutes per game on .388/.352/.855 shooting splits. Lowe posted 17 points and six assists in a top-10 road win over Duke in January.

That set the stage for a huge role as a sophomore.
Lowe was Pitt’s full-time starting point guard and best overall player in year two. The lefty guard led the Panthers in scoring (16.8), assists (5.5), steals (1.8), and free throw attempts (166). Lowe ranked fourth in the ACC in usage rate (30.1%) and seventh in minutes percentage (85.6%). Pitt asked a lot of the young point guard. The sophomore ended the season as a third-team All-ACC selection.
Pitt was arguably the most disappointing team in the ACC not named North Carolina in 2025. The expectation was for this group to make the NCAA Tournament but Lowe was a clear building block for the program moving forward.
Advanced Stat Profile: Jaland Lowe
Jaland Lowe entered the transfer portal with 836 career points and two years of eligibility remaining. The ACC transfer will be one of the top point guards available in the transfer market this offseason. The lefty showed some great playmaking at Pitt but the shooting numbers outside of the free throw line desperately need some improvement.
Stat | Finish | Ranking |
Minutes Percentage | 85.3% | No. 97 nationally |
Usage Rate | 29.7% | No. 65 nationally |
Assist Rate | 31% | No. 53 nationally |
Steal Percentage | 3% | No. 276 nationally |
Fouls Drawn Per 40 Minutes | 5.0 | No. 217 nationally |
Free Throw Percentage | 88.6% (5.3 attempts per game) | No. 47 nationally |
Two-Point Percentage | 43.4% (9.3 attempts per game) | N/A |
Three-Point Percentage | 26.6% (5.0 attempts per game) | N/A |
At Rim Percentage | 53.1% (4.6 attempts per game) | N/A |
Mid-Range Percentage | 33.8% (4.7 attempts per game) | N/A |
If Lowe lands at Kentucky, the mid-range volume should decrease significantly but the numbers at the rim and from deep are concerning. The guard scored as a sophomore due to high volume. This is a player that needs to get more efficient. That could come with a lower usage rate.
It’s clear that the Pitt transfer can run the show and set the table for his teammates. Lowe was very durable, got to the free throw line, and made an impact on defense by creating live ball turnovers for the Panthers. This is a productive point guard who appears to have his arrow pointing up as a player.
Some areas (shooting) need improvement but there appear to be reliable assists (assists, steals, minutes, free throw rate) that should translate fairly easily to his next stop. You could see the path to better offensive numbers in a better offensive system with space and more scoring threats around him. Kentucky could be that place.
