Transfer Portal Bio Blast: Tru Edwards
The winter transfer portal window closed on Dec. 28. We’ve seen some heavy player movement in this free agency period. Teams are working rapidly to close these fast-paced recruitments and are currently hosting prospects on visits before the spring semester begins.
Kentucky added their fourth transfer wide receiver and 19th total portal addition on Monday. Louisiana Tech transfer Tru Edwards became a Cat after wrapping up visit to Lexington over the weekend.
The class of 2019 product was granted an extra year of eligibility in 2025 due to the junior college injuction from Diego Pavia‘s lawsuit against the NCAA. That final season in college football will be spent in the SEC.
KSR’s Transfer Portal Bio Blast is taking a closer look at what the super senior will bring to offensive coordinator Bush Hamdan‘s unit as new wide receivers coach L’Damian Washington has helped the program land another wideout from Shreveport joining Alabama transfer Kendrick Law.
First three seasons spent in junior college and Hawaii
As a senior at Mansfield (Texas) Legacy, Tru Edwards was a two-way athlete playing football and running track. As a senior, Edwards recorded 27 receptions for 451 yards and three touchdowns but Edwards only played one season of varsity football.
His football journey would continue at Corsicana (Texas) Navarro College. Edwards spent two season in junior college from 2019-20. Edwards recorded 15 receptions for 357 yards as a freshman and backed that up with 39 receptions for 434 yards over seven games during a the shortened COVID-19 season. That production presented the first FBS opportunity for Edwards.
The wide receiver signed with Hawaii and spent one season playing for head coach Todd Graham. Edwards appeared in eight games and finished the season with five receptions. Edwards then left the program for Louisiana Tech as Hawaii saw massive turnover as player unrest ultimately led to Graham resigning from his post.

Three seasons at Louisiana Tech
Tru Edwards landed at Louisiana Tech in 2022 and only appeared in three games for first year head coach Sonny Cumbie. As a redshirt senior in 2023, Edwards played in 11 games (317 snaps) and accumulated 23 receptions for 284 yards and two touchdowns. That laid the foundation for a monster sixth season.
Edwards was a first-team All-CUSA selection as he led the conference in receptions (84) and ranked second in receiving yards (986). The wideout recorded at least six receptions in 10 consecutive games to end the season and went over 100 yards four times included a four-catch, 148-yards performance against NC State.
The wideout was all out of eligibility until junior college players received a blanked eligibility waiver. That opened the door for Edwards to move to power conference football. The wideout received offers from South Carolina, USC, Virginia Tech, Arizona State, Texas A&M, Florida State, Washington, and Mississippi State.
Luckett’s scouting notebook
Tru Edwards is a veteran wide receiver who will be 24 years old for his seventh season of college football in 2025. The veteran is the son of 1998 Biletnikoff Award winner Troy Edwards and has tallied 166 career receptions during his career in junior college and the Group of Five. The transfer figures to be a plug-and-play performer in Lexington.
This is my scouting write-up on the C-USA transfer.
Tru Edwards (6-3, 201) is a big-bodied receiver who made the move to slot in his final year in Louisiana Tech’s spread scheme. That move played major dividends. Drops (five) do show up on tape. Was productive in contested catch situations and forced 16 missed tackles. Did almost all of his damage as a short-to-intermediate wideout. Creates separation on routes and wins on double moves. Long strider who can create after the catch.
Big slot with some inside-outside versatility. Made a big jump when moved to a primary slot role. Can make tough catches at all three levels. Experienced wideout who is a big target over the middle of the field.
