Somebody Call the Doctor
We need a house call because MACtion fever is ravaging Big Blue Nation. While that may not be entirely true, it’s clear that Kentucky is changing its transfer portal strategy.
There have been two large transfer portal classes so far. In 2023 and 2024, 11 of the 14 incoming Kentucky transfers had Power Conference experience. That was also the case for five of the eight transfers in 2022 and all seven of the players in Kentucky’s first portal class.
Power Conference experience was a prerequisite for the Cats’ top targets in the transfer portal. That strategy worked early on, but now it’s time to adjust and that’s exactly what’s happening this offseason.
KSR has confirmed 11 visitors for the first week of the portal and seven of those players most recently played outside of the Power Conference ranks. Kentucky is completely flipping the script, seeking out all-conference players from the lower ranks to give them a shot in a higher division of football. The coaching staff is valuing proven production over potential, which feels like a wise strategy in the current climate of the program.

MAC Transfer Portal Players Visiting Kentucky
X Receiver
Kentucky is looking for a Dane Key replacement to pair with freshman DJ Miller. Kentucky got the first visit for Wake Forest wide receiver Horatio Fields, but he’s also taking trips to Auburn, South Carolina, and Duke. That’s where Justin Bowick enters the picture. The 6-foot-5 former Ball State wide receiver had 20 catches for 383 yards and 3 touchdowns in only four games, thanks to an injury. He has two years of eligibility remaining and he’ll also visit Louisville and Cincinnati.
Offensive Tackle
The Kentucky big board has a lot of big bodies on it. Alex Wollschlaeger was a First Team All-MAC selection at right tackle for Bowling Green last fall. The team captain and three-year starter helped the Falcons finish third in the conference. He’ll visit Indiana on Friday before checking out the scene in Lexington, hopefully in time to watch the Wildcats pound the Cards at Rupp.
Is Today the Day for the First Transfer Portal Commitment?
The visits started on Wednesday. Players are percolating in and out of the facility. Will one of the first four break the seal and join the Cats today? It feels like one is right around the corner.
Keep your head on a swivel.
