Later this year, the player that broke King Kelly Coleman’s state scoring record will play on the court that Coleman once called home. Travis Perry and Lyon County will face Floyd Central in Old Wayland Gym on December 16. In March, Perry scored 23 points at the Sweet 16 to move past Coleman (4,337 points) to become the Kentucky high school basketball all-time scoring leader, breaking a record that stood for nearly 70 years.

Perry, a varsity starter since seventh grade, now has 4,359 career points and a full senior season ahead of him. Coleman set his record in 1956, which, Perry pointed out after breaking it, was before the three-point line was added to the game.

“It’s obviously something very neat, but (Coleman) didn’t have the three-point line. It’s never been about the scoring record; it’s been about going out and playing basketball. Scoring points is fun but winning games is a lot more fun. That’s the thing I’m the most proud of today.”

Perry also owns the state single-game scoring record, a 61-point performance at Dawson Springs. John Calipari was in the stands for that one. Perry, the No. 88 prospect in the 2024 class in the On3 Industry Rankings, received an offer from Kentucky last June.

Old Wayland Gym given new life

December’s game will also celebrate Old Wayland Gym. King Kelly Coleman’s former court was built in 1937 and was home to the Wasps until the school closed in 1972. It was refurbished a few years ago thanks to the efforts of former Kentucky Mr. Basketball J.R. VanHoose and others. Old Wayland Gym is one of three in Eastern Kentucky to be recognized by the Kentucky High School Basketball Hall of Fame’s Glory Road Project, the others being Old Hindman Gym and the Prestonsburg Fieldhouse.

In February, Floyd Central (taking the court as Wayland) played Knott County (playing as Hindman) at Old Wayland Gym, the first game to take place there in over 50 years. Soon, it will host Kentucky’s new high school scoring king, bringing everything full circle.
