The all-time leading scorer in Kentucky high school basketball history is ready to focus on the next step of his career. Lyon County shooting guard Travis Perry, who broke Kelly “King” Coleman’s state scoring record at the Sweet 16 in March, gave Eric Bossi an update on his recruitment this week, including where the home state Wildcats stand.

Kentucky is one of several Power 5 programs to offer Perry, a four-star prospect ranked No. 77 in the 2024 On3 Industry Rankings. He’s yet to name finalists but has also visited Cincinnati, Michigan, Purdue, and Ole Miss. The Rebels are the favorites to land his services per the Recruiting Prediction Machine at 37.2%, followed by Michigan at 24.6%. Perry told Bossi that he wants to take a few more visits before wrapping up his recruitment ahead of his senior season, which tips off in late November/early December.

“I want to take a couple more visits and maybe see some of the places that I haven’t seen. Then after that kind of start to focus on a few schools so that I can make a decision. My goal is to make a decision before the high school season just because it’s my senior season and I want to enjoy that. But I might end up liking a few more schools and want to visit them again so we will just have to see how that goes.”

Perry talked about each of the schools he’s visited with Bossi. He spoke most about Ole Miss and Chris Beard, who took over for Kermit Davis after being fired by Texas. Perry has already visited Ole Miss twice, the most recent being an official in November 2022, but said Beard wants him to visit Oxford again. He also said he appreciates how often Beard has watched him play on the summer circuit with Indiana Elite, yet another reason the Rebels are likely the frontrunners.

What about Kentucky?

“They tell me to keep working and are just talking to me through it. They obviously have a couple of guards who are going to be playing well for them and they just want to continue to working on building that relationship.”

Anything can happen between now and late November, but it might be time to brace yourself for the Kentucky high school all-time leading scorer going elsewhere. If Reed Sheppard sticks around for a sophomore season, maybe we’ll get a rematch of the North Laurel vs. Lyon County game from January.
