Earlier on Thursday, Sumrall was named one of four finalists for the head coaching job at Troy by FootballScoop.com, along with Alabama assistant Charles Kelly, West Virginia assistant Jordan Lesley, and one other unnamed candidate. All four of them reportedly met with Troy officials on Thursday.
Here’s what FootballScoop.com had to say about Sumrall in its football scoop:
In football circles, Sumrall is heralded as one of the sport’s rising stars. Kentucky’s co-defensive coordinator, Sumrall already boasts deep ties to Troy – he was the program’s assistant head coach, special teams coordinator, linebackers coach and helped the Trojans to a trio of bowl appearances during his four-season term from 2015-18.
Sumrall, a Huntsville, Alabama, native, this season has helped implement a Wildcats’ defense that has fueled that program to the cusp of another New Year’s Day bowl game and possible 10-win season.

Sumrall to Troy was an easy decision for the Trojans program. He previously spent four years at Troy from 2015-18 as a swiss army knife; Assistant Head Coach/Linebackers/Special Teams Coordinator, all while helping engineer three bowl wins under former Trojan head coach and UK offensive coordinator Neal Brown.
