Troy Football to rename Offensive Line Room after John Schlarman
John Schlarman left an indelible mark on the University of Kentucky football program, but his legacy extends far beyond the Commonwealth. Saturday afternoon Troy football will rename its offensive line meeting room in honor of the late coach.
After spending a few years in the Kentucky high school ranks, John Schlarman’s collegiate coaching career began at Troy in 2007 alongside Neal Brown. Schlarman spent six seasons at Troy before he joined Brown on Mark Stoops’ inaugural coaching staff at Kentucky.
The Neal and Brooke Brown foundation made a generous donation to the Troy football program to rename the offensive line room after the Great American.
Troy head football coach Jon Sumrall played at Kentucky when Schlarman served as a GA in the early 2000s. He was a UK assistant alongside John Schlarman through the final two years of the late offensive line coach’s life. Troy is currently recruiting his son, Lexington Catholic OL Joe Schlarman.

“John Schlarman impacted lives by how he lived,” said Troy head coach Jon Sumrall. “He inspired me by his attitude, toughness and love for others, and his legacy will live on with Troy Football forever.”
Schlarman’s family will be at Troy for the special ceremony dedicating the new meeting room as Troy hosts Southern Miss. at 6 pm CT. The Trojans are 3-2 in Sumrall’s first season, a Hail Mary away from an unbeaten Sun Belt record.
Former Kentucky and Troy coaches came together to honor their late friend. It’s remarkable, a testament to the life Schlarman lived and how he still impacts others to this day.
