It was announced on Wednesday afternoon that former Kentucky Wildcat and Philadelphia 76ers rising star Tyrese Maxey has signed a shoe deal with New Balance.

Maxey joined Big Blue alumnus Jamal Murray as the second former ‘Cat to sign with the brand. Other New Balance representatives include Kawhi “The Klaw” Leonard, Jaylen Brown, Zach LaVine, and Dejounte Murray.

In 21 games played this season, Maxey is averaging a career-high 21.2 PPG to go along with 4.0 APG and 3.0 RPG. “Mad Max” missed time from November 19-December 27 due to a foot injury he sustained against the Milwaukee Bucks, but that hasn’t seemed to bother him upon his return. Tyrese averaged 14.0 PPG, 4.3 RPG, and 3.2 APG in 31 games played at Kentucky before COVID-19 ended his team’s season, marking the beginning of the Wildcats’ run of tournament blues.

Maxey opened many eyes across the NBA this past October when he scored 44 points on 9-12 three-point shooting in a 112-90 victory over the Toronto Raptors. In doing so, he set Philadelphia’s franchise record in three-pointers made.

New Balance is quickly becoming one of the hottest shoe brands in the entire league, just behind Nike and Jordan Brand. Maxey signing with New Balance comes as no surprise, as the breakout star has been wearing them all season, most recently matching the New Balance TWO WXY v3’s with Murray.

Let’s hope Maxey’s shoe contract is the first of many deals for the up-and-comer. A large extension from the 76ers has been looming large all season. Experts have been predicting a four-year deal in the ballpark of around $130 million.
