TyTy Washington‘s incredible play is not going unnoticed. Fresh off his fourth-straight SEC Freshman of the Week award, Washington pulled in another honor, winning CBS Sports/United States Basketball Writer’s Association (USBWA) National Freshman of the Week.
It’s the first national honor for Washington, who led the Cats with a career-high 28 points, five assists, and three steals in the 107-79 win over Tennessee. Against Vanderbilt, Washington had 15 points, four assists, four rebounds, a steal, and a block. He is the only freshman in the country averaging at least 13.0 points, at least 4.0 assists, and at least 4.0 rebounds per game while shooting at least 45% from the field and 40% or better from 3.

“Washington’s play was key to the effort [vs. Tennessee], and it extended beyond the eye-catching scoring numbers,” CBS Sports’ David Cobb wrote. “The 6-foot-3 guard added five assists and three steals to earn CBS Sports/USBWA Freshman of the Week honors. Washington was effective in transition, hit a couple of 3-pointers off the dribble in half court sets and managed to find sharpshooter Kellan Grady in stride for some huge buckets. The former five-star prospect is living up to his billing, and Washington’s performance against Tennessee was evidence that UK has the perimeter firepower it needs to be a serious national contender this season.”
Washington ranks third in CBS Sports’ “Frosh Watch” behind Duke’s Paolo Banchero and Auburn’s Jabari Smith. We’ll get to see both Washington and Smith in action Saturday on The Plains, but first, TyTy will help the Cats take care of business in College Station vs. Texas A&M tonight at 8:30 p.m.
