TyTy Washington wins third straight SEC Freshman of the Week award
If he keeps up this level of production, there will be no doubt who the SEC’s top rookie is by season’s end.
On Monday afternoon, it was announced that Kentucky point guard TyTy Washington was named the SEC’s Freshman of the Week for the third consecutive week and the fourth time this season. Washington broke UK’s single-game assists record during Saturday’s win over Georgia, dishing out 17 dimes in the 92-77 victory.
Washington played in two games last week for Kentucky against LSU and Georgia. The freshman dealt with cramping issues in the road loss to the Tigers, finishing with five points, six rebounds, and four assists, but bounced back in impressive fashion against UGA. Washington posted 17 points in addition to his 17 assists to go along with five rebounds, two steals, and just turnovers in what was a record-breaking performance. He took over starting point guard duties in place of the injured Sahvir Wheeler.

Now the recipient of the award for the third straight week, Washington is the first SEC player to accomplish this since former Wildcat Devin Booker did so four times in a row back in the 2014-15 season.
During his 2021-22 freshman campaign, Washington is posting averages of 13.6 points, 4.3 rebounds, 4.8 assists, 1.3 steals, and 1.5 blocks per outing on an outstanding shooting split of 49.4/40.0/82.4. He’s not the only weekly SEC award winner for the ‘Cats this year though. Oscar Tshiebwe and Sahvir Wheeler have both taken home SEC Player of the Week honors for UK.
Washington will look to continue his steady play on Tuesday when Kentucky heads down to Nashville for a clash with the Vanderbilt Commodores at 7 p.m. EST on ESPN.
