Kentucky Football announced the passing of one of its former captains on Wednesday. Vincent “Sweet Pea” Burns, a two-time All-SEC defensive lineman, died at 43 years old. Burns played in Lexington for three seasons from 2002-04 before he was drafted in the third round of the 2005 NFL Draft by the Indianapolis Colts. In Lexington, his 37 tackles for loss still rank tied for third all-time for a career. Burns’ record of 11 straight games with a TFL still stands today.

A native of Lake Park, Georgia, Burns captained Rich Brooks’ defenses in 2003 and 2004, Burns’ All-SEC seasons as a Wildcat. He was recruited to UK out of Northern Arizona University by Guy Morriss.

UK’s statement read, “Vincent “Sweet Pea” Burns was a three-year starter and a big-play performer, totaling 168 tackles, including 37 tackles for loss.  He was All-SEC two seasons and went on to play in the NFL for Indianapolis.  A two-year team captain at UK, he was beloved by his teammates and known for his upbeat personality.  RIP, Sweet Pea.”
