UK shuts down CSF for K Week after crowded luau

Classes start at the University of Kentucky today, and already, one student organization is in hot water for a crowded party.

According to the Kentucky Kernel, the Christian Student Fellowship (CSF) hosted its annual luau on Saturday night, but was forced to shut it down after the crowd got too big. UK has banned the CSF from hosting events the remainder of K Week. The CSF shared the news on Facebook, but later deleted the post:

The CSF hosts a luau every year, but this year, changed it from a dance party to a cookout, presumably in hopes of creating a more socially-distanced atmosphere.

That apparently did not work. Current state guidelines restrict gatherings to ten or fewer people. On Saturday, this video of a crowd around the CSF building was posted on Twitter:

This isn’t just a problem at UK; as students return to college campuses across the country, photos and videos of large gatherings are taking over social media. Yesterday, Alabama athletic director Greg Byrne tweeted this picture of a crowd in Tuscaloosa, preaching the importance of wearing masks and maintaining social distance:

Between enforcing the student code of conduct for on- and off-campus parties and now banning the CSF from holding events the rest of K Week, it’s clear UK is trying to keep students safe. But, it’s also becoming increasingly clear that asking students not to party in college is fruitless — even at an event with no alcohol involved.
