On Wednesday’s Unpopular Opinion Day, KSR listeners shared their most controversial takes on the air. The phone lines were jammed for two hours as KSR provided a judgment-free zone for callers to express their unpopular opinions. The day’s theme led to some outrageous comments from the audience.

For example, one caller, Rick, was fed up with older Kentucky fans lifting up Dan Issel. Rick said Issel, the school’s all-time leader in points and rebounds, doesn’t belong in an all-time starting five because “Issel couldn’t play in the modern era.”

Another UK legend was attacked when caller Tristan compared Tim Couch to former Mississippi State quarterback Will Rogers, calling Couch “the Will Rogers of his time.” Rogers broke the SEC’s records for single-season and career completions while playing for the late Mike Leach, who was Couch’s quarterback coach and offensive coordinator in 1997-98.

UK’s cheerleaders, Rupp Arena ice cream, Cawood Ledford, and “My Old Kentucky Home” also received unpopular criticism, as did Keeneland, sugary candy, Zach Bryan, and dad bods.

While these opinions might have angered some listeners, they certainly made for compelling summer radio and brought to light some outlandish viewpoints. Hear it all in the two-hour podcast below, then read many of the unpopular submissions to KSBoard.

Best (or Worst) of KSBoard’s Unpopular Opinions

Over at KSBoard, the Unpopular Opinions message board thread has 300 comments and still going. Here are some of the UK-related submissions:

Billy Gillispie was an elite X and O coach.

First one that comes to mind as it came up recently, but I simply was not interested at all really in La Familia and the TBT. As a basketball fan, I watched the games and obviously cheered for them over the other teams…but I was completely uninvested. There was a small nostalgia factor, but watching halfway washed up players from a decade ago just wasn’t all that appealing.

The new college football game isn’t very good after you get through the honeymoon phase.

The Power K is a relic of an era when UK football was awful and the baseball team was the worst program in the SEC. It also doesn’t even look good. Notice I didn’t mention anything about basketball because it has never appeared on a Kentucky basketball uniform.

Kentucky football has one of the best tailgate setups in the SEC and the fan base should be more thankful for that.

I love when Kentucky plays at a snail’s pace in football. Every second we have the ball is another second the more talented team doesn’t. Plus, games don’t run as late into the night.

What Stoops has done for Kentucky football is more impressive of an accomplishment then what Cal did for basketball. Stoops may complain about NIL and yeah he about bounced to A&M. But Cal ostracized the fan base, while for his faults at time never Stoops has been anything but grateful to the ppl.

Nerlens Noel was a better player at Kentucky than Karl Anthony Towns.

Big Blue Madness is boring.

Boom Williams is the most overrated player of the Stoops era.

Grove street is losing so much juice as a pump up. We need something new.

We have the worst student section in college basketball. Nothing makes me cringe more than when they say the 6th man of the cats, the erruption zone and they cheer for 10 seconds. Then they sit on their phones or have their arms folded the rest of the game.

– Going 7-5 or worse in football, even in the SEC is mediocrity and shouldn’t be tolerated.

– Tailgating needs to be banned.
