The coaching carousel is still dormant at the power conference level, but it’s already spinning in the Group of Five. One opening appears to be connected to Kentucky associate head coach Vince Marrow.

Southern Miss has made serious inquiries with Vince Marrow to fill its head coaching position, according to Rivals’ Justin Rowland. KSR’s Matt Jones confirmed that Mark Stoops’ longtime righthand man was contacted by the school, but removed his name from consideration.

Southern Miss fired Will Hall after a 1-6 start to his fourth season in Hattiesburg, including a season-opening loss at Kentucky. Hall posted a 14-30 record with the Golden Eagles, who made a move from C-USA to the Sun Belt during his tenure.

Southern Miss was once a proud program that consistently filled a 30,000-seat stadium. The Golden Eagles were winners who brought home eight conference championships. The program was an unfortunate victim of conference realignment and has fallen on hard times. Resurrecting Southern Miss to greatness is no small task.

Money Doesn’t Add Up for MArrow

According to USA Today, Hall earned $824,000 in 2024, well below the $1.3 million annual salary for Marrow. Ahead of the 2024 campaign, Marrow signed a contract extension through the 2026 season.

Even though Southern Miss was interested, it’s difficult to see a scenario where the Big Dog financially benefits by making a move from Kentucky to coach at a school that’s located outside of the geographical footprint where he’s had substantial recruiting success.

However, it is noteworthy that Marrow’s name is in the coaching carousel mix. Brad White has been floated as a candidate for defensive coordinator vacancies in the midst of Kentucky’s 4-6 season.
