A lot is going on in that headline, right? It’s completely real. I’m not high. So, if interstellar travel and Kentucky tourism interest you, put on your tinfoil hat, and we will proceed with this brilliant marketing tactic in Lexington.

The Lexington Convention and Visitors Bureau (VisitLEX) recently launched the first-known interstellar tourism campaign, inviting aliens to make the long flight across the galaxy to see all Lexington, Kentucky, has to offer. More than an ad, VisitLEX partnered with actual scientists to fire off a modified laser from the Kentucky Horse Park, intended to send the open invitation some 40 lightyears away.

“The message contains a bitmap key with prime numbers, the elements of life molecules for water, ethanol, and dopamine, plus horses and Lexington’s iconic bluegrass landscape,” a video showcasing the launch explained. “The message also contains a collection of images representing Lexington, a selfie from the transmission event, and an audio recording from local blues legend TD Young.”

A countdown clock on VisitLEX.com estimates the message will be delivered in the TRAPPIST-1 solar system in 38 years and 263 days. Hopefully, the RSVP comes back faster. A text will be fine.

LEXINGTON THINGS THE ALIENS WON’T BELIEVE

  • New Circle Road – It will be hard to impress our time-traveling guests, but an infinite road around Lexington? If the ingenuity and the Planet Fitnesses don’t wow them, the full moons to the north and east will.
  • Indi’s Fried Chicken – The TRAPPIST-1 solar system may be far more advanced, but Earth mastered fried chicken.
  • Lynn Bowden’s 2019 highlights – Or is he one of them?
  • Construction – We should cover up all of those barrels before our company arrives.
  • Rupp Arena – There will be a lot to process for the first-timers, but once they get through the ice cream line, the Big Blue Nation may add some extraterrestrial fans.
  • Keeneland – One Keeneland Saturday with great weather and they’ll never go back home.
