Washington State DL transfer David Gusta commits to Kentucky
Kentucky has landed one of the best available players from the transfer portal.
On Saturday night, Washington State defensive lineman transfer David Gusta told On3’s Hayes Fawcett that he has committed to the Wildcats. Gusta is ranked as the No. 2 defensive lineman in the portal and the top available prospect at his position. He is currently in Lexington on an official visit.
“I like the coaching staff and d-line coach and I see what they’ve produced with guys like Deone Walker,” Gusta told On3 earlier this week. “Also the scheme is a good fit and I found out my uncles live near the campus so I’ll have family out there. And also the strength staff I’ve heard a lot of good things. They’re really good people out there.”
The 6-foot-3, 300-pound Gusta recorded 21 tackles, three tackles for loss, one sack, and three pass breakups this past season for the Cougars. Texas A&M and Tennessee were also in the mix for the native of California. A redshirt senior, Gusta has one year of eligibility remaining.
Considered a three-star recruit out of San Bernandino (CA) Cajon, Gusta received offers from the likes of Nevada, Fresno State, New Mexico, Arizona, and a few others. After originally committing to Fresno State, he flipped to Washington State in July 2020 and spent the next four seasons in Pullman.

Gusta redshirted his freshman season in 2021 after not appearing in a single game. He saw plenty of time on the field in 2022 though, playing 10 games for the Cougars including one start. He finished with 11 tackles. Gusta turned into a full-time starter in 2023, totaling 30 tackles, three quarterback hurries, two tackles for loss, and half a sack as a redshirt sophomore.
But 2024 was easily his most productive campaign yet. He was second on the team with 22 quarterback hurries, according to Pro Football Focus, and also posted the fourth-best pass rush grade (82.4) in the country by an interior defensive lineman. On3 ranks him as a Top 50 player to enter the portal this offseason.
Now, he’s coming to play football in the SEC. Gusta is the 15th portal commit for the ‘Cats since the 2024 season came to a close.
