WATCH: ESPN's Marty Smith profiles the Stoops family
Kentucky’s 31-0 win over Youngstown State on Saturday was about far more than what happened on the field. The town of Youngstown, OH is the birthplace of several key Wildcats on staff, most importantly head football coach Mark Stoops. Friends and family of Mark made the trip to Lexington over the weekend to celebrate him becoming the program’s all-time winningest coach.
In fact, the entire Stoops family is from Youngstown. Mark’s father Ron was the longtime defensive coordinator at the nearby Cardinal Mooney High School and Ron’s love for football didn’t take long to trickle down the family tree. Not only is Mark a widely successful college coach, but so are his brothers Bob (who won a national title at Oklahoma in 2000) and Mike (who is now the inside linebackers coach at UK).
With a reunion of sorts in order over the weekend, ESPN’s Marty Smith profiled the Stoops family and their past life in Youngstown ahead of Saturday’s game. You’ll definitely want to check it out.
People from Youngstown, there is a chip on our shoulder, and that’s going to stay there as long as I coach. — Mark Stoops
