There is a lot to unpack from John Calipari’s Friday afternoon press conference, his first since last season ended in Greensboro. With less than two weeks until Kentucky‘s first exhibition games, Calipari emerged from his offseason silence to preview those games and discuss the state of his team now that the roster is finalized.

In the thirty-minute conversation, he spoke about the new challenges in college basketball, namely the NIL and transfer portal chaos, and suggested ways the sport can tighten up its rules and regulations to get back on track. He wouldn’t go into a lot of details about his own team ahead of the trip to Canada but did have great things to say about his latest coaching hire, plus an update on Aaron Bradshaw and how the entire roster came together.

Calipari also had an interesting prediction for later in the summer that a new group of graduate transfers will look to switch schools in August. He doesn’t expect his team to add anyone else for 2023-24, but he also didn’t say he wouldn’t consider it in the right circumstances.

With all of those interesting topics, Lil Wayne and lasagna somehow became the theme of the afternoon as Calipari dropped (or attempted to drop) a Lil Wayne lyric to describe how Kentucky keeps its operation quiet and in-house.

“Real G’s move in silence like lasagna.”
