Kentucky beat WKU 88-70 on Saturday night, and Kenny Brooks and Clara Strack would recap the win in their postgame press conference. Brooks got things started with an opening statement, talking about how impressive it was to have the Big Blue Nation pack Historic Memorial Coliseum like they did.

“First and foremost, the crowd was unbelievable,” Brooks said. “When you get a crowd like that, you want to play well for them so they’ll continue to come back. I was very pleased with that. You never know what to expect when you come up from Christmas — from the crowd to your team.”

Brooks added, “This was a game that we wanted to put on the schedule with Western, and they couldn’t play a different date because I think their conference season starts a day or two ahead of ours. So, we had to play it on the 28th — I would prefer to put on 29th. You normally have, like, your third practice and then you play a game. Well, this was our second. We had two practices and then a game. So, I felt like we were a little bit sluggish at times, just trying to get our legs back up underneath of us.”

At the same time, however, Brooks wanted to get out of this game without having to do too much schematically.

“But we also wanted to play a very bland game, very vanilla game,” Brooks explained. “We put in about four different plays, and we didn’t run any of them. Defensive coverages, we kind of stuck to just one, one scenario because obviously, when you’re going to play in the SEC coming up the next week, you know that everyone’s going to be watching you. We just played a simple way.”

The Lady Toppers, especially early on, did a good job of disrupting that gameplan.

“To give credit to Western, Greg [Collins] does a really good job. It’s fun watching them. He has a very talented team, a very seasoned team. I think they’re gonna win a lot of basketball games, especially when they start playing their conference. So, they’ve already started winning a lot, but it was a good test for us, and I thought we came through pretty well. Got some things we need to work on.”
