Kentucky offense interviews Ole Miss week

We are almost through the month of September and Tuesday night was the first time I arrived for a post-practice talking session with the team and heard artificial noise coming from the Kentucky football practice field. It feels a bit odd to wait this long. Thankfully, it wasn’t the din of cowbells.

Instead of Starkville, this year the Cats are traveling to Ole Miss. The sound of cowbells would be welcoming against that putrid football team. Rather than beating up the worst team in the SEC, Kentucky must face the fifth-ranked team in the country from the former western division.

The Ole Miss offense grabs all of the headlines, but the defense has been dominant against inferior foes. Opponents are averaging 1.1 yards per carry and only one team has forced more punts, Iowa.

“The front seven, the defensive line really jumps out, an extremely talented group on both the outside and the interior,” said offensive coordinator Bush Hamdan.

He added, “It’s going to be a good challenge. We’re battle-tested. We’ve faced a good defense in South Carolina and Georgia. We’re excited for this opportunity.”

Kentucky has seen a few excellent fronts, but never on the road. Vince Marrow, wide receivers coach Daikiel Shorts, and freshman tight end Willie Rodriguez talked about the challenges of playing away from home and much more before the Wildcats make the trip to Oxford for a Noon EST kickoff on ABC.
