Fresh off winning his second SEC Offensive Player of the Week Award this month, Lynn Bowden called into The Paul Finebaum Show to talk about stepping into the role of quarterback and leading Kentucky to a big win over Missouri. When asked, Bowden said he wasn’t sure if he’ll continue to play quarterback or shift back to wide receiver now that Sawyer Smith’s healthy, but insisted he’s good with whatever decision the coaching staff makes.

“Right now [the coaches] are just putting the game plan together. I don’t know how it’s going to go. I’m prepared for everything, whether I’ve got to play offense, defense, play everything at once, I can do it. I’ll just put my mind to it and put my trust in God.”

After Kentucky’s loss to South Carolina, Bowden said he texted Mark Stoops to let him know he was prepared to play quarterback with Sawyer hurt and that the bye week helped him get into the groove of his old position. That’s a pretty difficult transition — especially at the SEC level — which makes his recent performances all the more impressive. As Finebaum pointed out, Bowden is the fourth SEC player in the last 20 seasons with 50 passing yards and 200 rushing yards in a game. The other three? Nick Fitzgerald, Johnny Manziel, and Cam Newton.

“It’s just a blessing to be a part of that,” Bowden said of being in the company of two Heisman winners. “Those are some great players. Like you said, it’s probably too late [to win the Heisman], but anything can happen.”

For now, Bowden has much more important priorities than winning awards.

“I’m just here, trying to do what’s best for the team, what’s best for my family and me. I want to make this experience something to remember. I want people to remember me as a team player, not a selfish guy.”
