Watch Mark Pope, Otega Oweh, and Amari Williams recap the loss
Before the team flight home, Mark Pope and two of his players faced the music in the postgame press conference from Oxford, Mississippi. Fresh off a 14-point loss at Ole Miss, Pope sat with Amari Williams and Otega Oweh in front of the cameras and audio recorders to explain all that went wrong in the game, Kentucky’s fifth loss in SEC play.
“I didn’t help the guys enough, trying to find answers,” Pope admitted in his opening statement. “The biggest frustration is on the defensive end, and I am doing a poor job of finding answers right now.”
Pope couldn’t recall a game in which an opponent had only one turnover before admitting again that the blame falls on him for not having his Wildcats ready to defend at a higher level.
“My guys are playing hard. I’m doing a poor job with our team defensively right now. It’s a credit to Ole Miss, and it’s a real issue for me, and I have to figure out how to help our team have more of a presence.”
