WATCH: Mark Stoops, Brock Vandagriff and JJ Weaver discuss first scrimmage for Cats
How did Kentucky‘s first scrimmage of the fall go on Saturday? Mark Stoops shared the full report shortly after things wrapped up at the Joe Craft Football Practice Facility. Quarterback Brock Vandagriff and pass-rusher JJ Weaver gave their thoughts, as well.
The consensus? It was a very, very good day for the Wildcats.
“I was very pleased with the scrimmage,” Stoops said afterward. “You all know the situation in the spring, got a little thin at certain positions and it limited the full contact we had. We knew heading into this camp how important it’d be just to play physical, get some live reps in and we’ve been practicing that way. Not live, but we’ve been trying to have some physical parts of practice throughout camp and then today we cut it loose with a full scrimmage. It was really good to see us out there.”
The best news? Kentucky came out of the day mostly healthy, although there is one update the staff is waiting on. Outside of that, Stoops said the team accomplished everything it hoped entering the day.
“We came out of there clean, one that I’m concerned about. We’ll see and update you next week, but overall, it was pretty good,” he added. “And we needed it. We needed it, got a lot of snaps. I felt very good about the operation, the communication with the quarterbacks and on defense. … Overall, we got a lot of work done.”

Analyst calls out Kentucky fans
He said things were “pretty clean” on both sides of the ball in terms of execution, singling out Vandagriff’s progress while noting the running back unit is one that has seen growth and the offensive line is adding depth.
As for Vandagriff and Weaver, the former discussed the new helmet communication and how it has helped with tempo along with his relationship with the wide receivers while the latter noted the offensive line play has been terrific with the pass rush creating some intense head-to-head battles.
