As Freddie Maggard wrote earlier today, we are still getting to know Rich Scangarello, the new offensive coordinator on Kentucky’s campus. For Freddie, this morning’s post-practice press conference was his first time being around Scangarello. What he saw was, “a detailed, highly intelligent, and analytical coach that appears to eat, sleep, and do football stuff twenty-four hours a day.”

Before today, Scangarello held three other Tuesday Q&As to discuss practice, plus his initial introductory press conference on March 1. Outside of those conversations, he isn’t on social media and maintains a pretty low profile online.

So let’s overanalyze the clip Kentucky Football shared last night of its new coordinator mic’d up in practice. There are some glimpses at the offense in the short video, too.

Scangarello Mic’d Up

Right out of the gate, we see Scangarello, a QB specialist, working with Levis on his mechanics and vision. “You got to hold your eyes as long as you can,” he tells Levis. Last season, Levis could’ve been better at tricking defenses with his eyes and it’s an area he’ll need to improve for the next level. His pocket composure under pressure is also a weakness for NFL purposes, but he got better as time went on in his first full year as a starter. Scangarello’s experience should be good for Levis’ career at Kentucky and beyond.

30 seconds in, we see Scangarello’s Aaron Rogers impersonation. Can we all just take a moment to appreciate that Kentucky has a quarterback who is encouraged to make an off-balanced toss like Aaron Rogers?

One other observation, I hear Steve Zahn’s voice in Scangarello’s coaching. As others have noted already, Zahn could play him in a movie. Anyone seen them around Lexington at the same time?

Bonus: Fans excited to see freshman wide receiver Dane Key can see Key on the other end of a first down pass from Will Levis at the 1:10 mark. There will be more of that connection on display at Saturday’s spring game, although Scangarello warned we won’t see much from the playbook.

Go Cats.
