Longtime daytime TV host Phil Donahue passed away on Sunday at 88. Donahue was a talk show trailblazer with his “The Phil Donahue Show,” which aired in syndication for 29 years and paved the way for many other talk shows of the same format. Donahue pioneered audience participation on TV from his live studio audience, allowing the crowd to ask the show’s guests questions.

KSR’s own Ryan Lemond, who celebrated a birthday on Sunday, attended a taping of “Donahue” in 1989. The guest that day was Ralph Nader, then a consumer advocate who would go on to several presidential bids as a Green Party candidate.

On the show, Nader took a question from young Ryan Lemond in the audience about the effect of hospital X-rays. Ryan told the story of his “Donahue” appearance and X-ray question on today’s KSR show. Hours later, a video of Ryan, Phil Donahue, and Ralph Nader appeared online, thanks to our friend Corey Price.

Enjoy young Ryan and his sweater, KSR fans. And happy belated birthday to Ryan.

Incredible find by Corey. Incredible work by young Ryan Lemond.

Previewing Kentucky Football’s roster with Ryan on Monday’s KSR show

In addition to his Donahue story, Ryan shined on Monday’s show with his fun facts about Kentucky Football‘s offense while I provided a breakdown of the defensive side of the ball. It took Ryan a couple of players to get warmed up with the facts, but he eventually got rolling with information about his projected starters on offense.

You can hear KSR’s roster rundown and more on Monday’s podcast, hosted by Matt Jones from a remote location in New York City. Ryan and I were at the iHeart studio in downtown Lexington.
