Weekend News And Notes

There is about to be an awkward high-five/fist bump scenario for sure in the bottom picture, but we don’t get to see enough “Happy Cal” during the season.

For Kentucky basketball fans, this weekend was the culmination of a week in the Bahamas that appeared to prove what we had all imagined since UK’s roster was done shaking out in late April; this team is going to be INCREDIBLE. Tyler Ulis, Devin Booker, and Karl-Anthony Towns proved to be everything they were advertised as prospects. Alex Poythress became Hulk Poythress and never changed back, and the Harrison twins looked like the mature court leaders everyone expected them to be heading into their sophomore seasons. All in all, it was a successful offseason trip for the Wildcats and the depth of this years team, combined with the extra practices they have received over the last month is a bad combination for the teams in the first part of Kentucky’s schedule this year.

On the football side of things, not much has changed in terms of BIG news. By that, I mean what everyone is waiting for, a starting quarterback selection. It still appears that Patrick Towles and Reese Phillips are the 2 most likely options, if only because redshirting Drew Barker at this point seems logical if he hasn’t seperated himself enough from the other 2 QB’s by now. We should know early in the week who the staff picks and we can talk more about the decision then. In other news though, the Wide Receiver’s (the healthy ones) appear to be gaining traction in fall camp. Neal Brown has mentioned Rashad Cunningham and incoming freshman Blake Bone as standouts on the outside while freshman walk-on (and former St. X QB) Charles Walker has impressed the coaching staff from the slot WR position. Oh yeah, and the team took part in the “Ice Bucket Challenge” as well.

Anthony Davis is still bringing the boom on poor souls that attempt to block his alley-oop finishes. They will never learn, and I will never stop enjoying each poster dunk.

Here’s to another solid week of football practice, we’re only 12 or 13 days away from Kentucky Football at Commonwealth Stadium depending on what day you’re reading this. We will make it.
