KSR Today: Grab some Weetabix and let's get ready for the Tennessee Volunteers

Good morning, BBN. Grab your box of Weetabix and warm some milk because we’ve got another busy day here at KentuckySportsRadio.com. Monday was spent savoring Kentucky’s win over Illinois. Now, it’s time to start turning our attention to Friday night’s rematch with Tennessee in the Sweet 16.
First, speaking of Weetabix, it continues to be the No. 1 selling cereal on Amazon thanks to Kentucky fans. On Saturday, the English cereal was averaging around 300 units per day on Amazon. On Sunday, that number increased to 419 units as Kentucky fans first heard about how it played a role in Amari Williams’ big performance vs. Illinois. On Monday, that figure soared to nearly 900, meaning that Kentucky fans TRIPLED Weetabix’s Amazon sales in two days.

As Amari Williams tweeted last night, BBN, y’all are crazy. If that’s not enough to get him a Weetabix NIL deal, I’m not sure what is.
There’s still time to get your box. On his call-in show last night, Mark Pope encouraged Kentucky fans to join him, Williams, and Brandon Garrison on the Weetabix train for Friday’s game vs. Tennessee.
“Everybody in BBN, I welcome you all, if you guys want to join us for morning breakfast and have some Weetabix on Friday morning as we prepare for the game. Warm milk, to me, is key. Little bit of sugar, and apparently it’s also good with some honey and some bananas if you want to go that way. So Kentucky Weetabix Unity March Towards March Madness.”
With all that fiber, Kentucky will head to Indy with momentum and regularity. I can’t wait for my box to get here today. While I wait, let’s talk about some more notes from the Mark Pope show, Tennessee, and what else is happening in the Bluegrass.
Pope predicts Kentucky will have “great success” in the transfer portal
The transfer portal officially opened for business on Monday, with over 700 players putting their names in. So far, there are some intriguing prospects for the Cats (Nevada forward Nick Davidson, North Dakota guard Treysen Eaglestaff, and Virginia guard Isaac McKneely to name a few). Pope said the staff is keeping tabs on who’s entering the portal and believes this season has proved that Kentucky is an elite portal destination.
“We have a dozen massive Excel spreadsheets that we’re updating literally minute by minute. And with coaching changes, we’ve been able to talk some kids in the portal, and we got to talk to some kids who are entering the portal as we speak. And trying to keep all that organized is a huge task, but it’s really exciting, because there are incredibly talented players. I think guys have seen the massive success that our transfers have had this year, and I expect that we’re going to have great success recruiting the portal.”
For more on Kentucky’s portal pursuits, I’ll direct you to Jacob Polacheck’s work on KSR+. He’s started a Transfer Portal Tracker and shared some early thoughts on Monday’s entries.
Pope noticed a new wrinkle in Tennessee’s defense
Pope had plenty of praise for Tennessee, which he called one of the most consistent teams in the country thanks to its elite defense. Pope and his staff are pretty familiar with the Vols after facing them twice, but even he noticed something new while watching the tape of the Tennessee vs. UCLA game on the way home from Milwaukee.

“We’re flying home from Milwaukee, watching the UCLA vs. Tennessee game, and all of a sudden, towards the end of the first half, they throw in a three quarter court, 1-2-2, that’s more aggressive than any 1-2-2 that we’ve seen this year. We’ve seen a bunch from Mississippi State and Texas A&M and Missouri, and it was brand new, and it really caught UCLA off guard. I know that UCLA, they were so frustrated and back-to-back plays, they dribbled it into a coffin corner and turned it over and it just hadn’t been something you’ve seen in scouting before.”
After seeing Pope play chess vs. Illinois, I can’t wait to see what he draws up for the Vols on Friday.
Kentucky Baseball hosts Xavier
The Kentucky Baseball team avoided a sweep this past weekend, beating Auburn 6-0 to finish the series 1-2. Today, the Bat Cats will look to make it two wins in a row vs. Xavier. Kentucky is now 15-7, 2-4 in SEC play. Xavier is 11-13, coming off a sweet of Ball State. The Musketeers have played three SEC teams so far this year — Tennessee, Vanderbilt, and LSU — and lost to all of them.
First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. If you can’t make it to Kentucky Proud Park, you can watch live on SEC Network+.
Kentucky Softball hosts Stanford
Next door at John Cropp Stadium, the Kentucky Softball team hosts Stanford. The Cats are 21-11 this season, coming off a series win vs. No. 20 Ole Miss. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
I’m looking forward to more editions of “Horn’s Hot Mic”
This slipped under the radar a bit, but Walker Horn put his media hat on in Milwaukee and did locker room interviews for the UK Sports Network. Check out his conversations with his teammates, who took some March Madness mementos from the locker room in Milwaukee.
KSR the show returns to KSBar
On Monday, the radio and site staff returned home from Milwaukee just in time to do some laundry and get ready to head to Indianapolis. Today, the show returns to KSBar, where the guys will recap their trip home and talk about a fun week ahead — and maybe follow Annette’s lead and give out some hugs. Don’t miss it.
