UK head coach Wesley Woodyard? Maybe one day.
Earlier this week we learned former Kentucky linebacker Wesley Woodyard picked up a coaching gig in his retirement from 12 seasons in the NFL. Woodyard told Kentucky Sports Radio he dropped the football and picked up a baseball, and now serves as his son’s little league coach down in Florida.
What he didn’t mention in our conversation is how his new little league job is only a stepping stone to his ultimate coaching dream: to be the head football coach at the University of Kentucky.

Woodyard shared his interest in the job when he hopped back on the 630 WLAP airwaves Friday morning to chat with Tom Leach on the Leach Report. When asked if he has any plans to coach football one day, Woodyard replied, “My dream is still to be the head football coach at Kentucky one day, so I’m still keeping that open and want to explore that one day. But I tell you what, I’m enjoying seeing Coach Stoops kick butt out there with those guys. Who knows, maybe one day I’ll get back up there to Lexington and start my coaching career.”
The Kentucky job is Mark Stoops’ job for the foreseeable future and for as long as he wants it. But maybe there is a futuristic world where Woodyard is on Stoops’ staff, coaching up the linebackers on how to go from undrafted to NFL team captain every season, or how to stop the No. 1-ranked college football team on 4th and 2 in triple overtime. There is no question Woodyard would make a great linebackers coach, and like he said–who knows, maybe one day.
Until that day, I hope this doesn’t cause a distraction in his little league locker room.
