John Calipari has added a significant piece to the 2023-24 roster.

On Monday afternoon, West Virginia transfer Tre Mitchell announced that he has committed to the Kentucky Wildcats. The 6-foot-9 power forward took an official visit to Lexington over the weekend, just days after entering his name into the portal. This will be Mitchell’s fourth school after making previous stops at UMass, Texas, and West Virginia. He will have one year of eligibility remaining.

During his senior season at WVU in ’22-23, Mitchell averaged 11.7 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 1.8 assists in 30.0 minutes per game. He started in 32 of the 34 games he appeared in, shooting 47.0 percent overall, 36.4 percent from beyond the arc, and 78.9 percent from the free-throw line. Across his career, Mitchell has shot 34.7 percent from distance on 2.9 attempts per game.

Graduating from Woodstock (CT) Academy — the same program that produced former Kentucky forward Jacob Toppin — Mitchell was considered a four-star recruit and top 100 prospect from the class of 2023 according to the On3 Industry Ranking. He was named the Connecticut Gatorade Player of the Year as a senior before committing to UMass over the likes of Indiana, Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, Providence, and Syracuse.

Mitchell made an immediate impact with the Minutemen, winning the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year and making Second-Team All-Atlantic 10 in year one before being named First-Team All-Atlantic 10 as a sophomore. Across his two seasons with UMass, the Pittsburgh, PA product averaged 18.0 points, 7.2 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.1 steals, and 1.2 blocks per outing while starting 43 of his 44 appearances.

From there, Mitchell would enter the portal for the first time, transferring to Texas for the 2021-22 season. His number dipped with the Longhorns down to 8.7 points 4.0 rebounds, and 1.3 assists in just 18.6 minutes per contest. During February of that season, Mitchell would take a leave of absence from the program and did not return to the team before putting his name in the portal once again in the offseason.

A second transfer led to him landing in Morgantown with the Mountaineers. Mitchell’s on-court production bounced back with WVU in ’22-23 as he helped lead the program to a 19-15 record (7-11 Big 12). But after now-former head coach Bob Huggins resigned earlier this month, Mitchell was allowed to enter the portal for a third time as a graduate student. Now, he’s off to Lexington to finish out his college career.
