Asia Boone became the second transfer to commit to Kenny Brooks and Kentucky this offseason on Thursday. The two-time All-CUSA guard bring a lot to the table as a player. Just as we did with Josie Gilvin, let’s dive into what her commitment means for the program.

Adding a productive three-point shooter to the rotation

When you look at the stat sheet, the first thing that jumps out about Boone is her ability to knock it down from deep at an efficient clip. For her career, she shoots 36.9% from three-point range on 5.1 attempts per game.

She has the ability to run the point, but more than likely, she’ll play more of a Dazia Lawrence role — being a knockdown off-the-ball shooter. However, her addition does add some variety for the point guard position. Of course, the starting point guard remains to be seen, but there’s a world where it could be Boone, though that doesn’t seem super likely at the moment.

Regardless, she’ll bring production — something that last year’s bench did not for the most part. Oftentimes, Brooks was forced to stick to a 6-7 player rotation, but adding a piece like Boone may allow him to open things up a bit more.

Do we have a formula for what Brooks is looking for in the portal?

What do Josie Gilvin and Asia Boone have in common?

For starters, they’re both from Conference USA. That’s neat, but that seems like a bit of a coincidence. However, Kentucky played both Western Kentucky and Liberty this season. Maybe Brooks watched some of their film (and saw Gilvin firsthand, not so much with Boone) and liked what he saw.

In the future, maybe we can look at some of the best mid-major players that Kentucky faces and monitor if they enter the transfer portal. If they do, maybe there’s a good chance that Brooks goes after them.

Not a one-and-done rental

Unlike Gilvin, Boone isn’t going to be one-and-done at Kentucky (assuming she sticks it though in Lexington). The 5-foot-8 guard is a rising junior with two years of eligibility remaining.

So, under Brooks next season, she’ll have the opportunity to develop and get valuable reps in. Plus, in his shooter-friendly offense, her game should elevate all the more. When Boone is a senior, she could be really, really good. Perhaps a starter alongside 2026 four-star commit Maddyn Greenway in the backcourt.

This could end up being an under-the-radar get for the Cats.
