What the hell is happening at Louisville?

The University of Louisville released a statement Wednesday afternoon stating junior guard Koron Davis had “informed the program that he intends to transfer” and the Cardinals “support him and wish him well in the future.”

And that’s like the sixth most interesting part of the story that continues to unravel by the minute.

Let’s try to break this thing down step by step. Davis was a JUCO addition from Los Angeles Southwest, an unranked player who didn’t even have a recruiting profile upon joining the program. It was a questionable take to begin with.

He then suited up in the Red-White Scrimmage and one exhibition game vs. Simmons College in less-than-stellar performances. Then he never played again, never registered a single regular-season minute. In the midst of that, rumors circulating about Davis’ behavior behind the scenes, including a potential dust-up with Kenny Payne in practice — vehemently denied by the UofL basketball program. True or not, the JUCO transfer never sat on the Louisville bench during games again and even showed up later to sit in the crowd during the Cardinals’ win over Bellarmine in November.

Payne continued to brush off any speculation regarding Davis’ behavior, going as far as saying “Koron Davis is not in trouble” and “he’s a part of this team right now.”

Then came today.

At 1:24 p.m. ET, Davis tweeted his first semester at Louisville had come to a close and he finished in good academic standing.

“I’m extremely proud of myself. I challenged myself in the classroom and got it done. I’m enjoying the college experience being a true student-athlete. Where I come from a lot of people don’t get this opportunity,” Davis said. “I want to say thank you to everyone at U of Louisville, Cards Nation and the city of Louisville for taking me in. Today I’ll be at YUM Center supporting our women’s team and my teammates at the doubleheader.”

Just over an hour later at 2:47 p.m. ET, Louisville’s statement indicating Davis was no longer with the team.

Then at 3:58 p.m. ET? A follow-up tweet from Davis indicating he never informed the school he planned to transfer.

“I didn’t express to anyone at U of Louisville that I wanted to transfer. I never asked to transfer,” he tweeted. “I enjoy being a Cardinal. The fact an official statement was released giving false information is disheartening and sad.”

Now? Davis is sitting at the UofL women’s basketball game, turning down interview requests: “Not right now, I have to wait.”

Meanwhile, Kenny Payne and the men’s basketball team is scheduled to take on Arkansas State tonight inside the YUM! Center, tip-off scheduled for 8 p.m. ET.

Will Davis still be sitting in the stands? What will KP have to say after the game?

What a disaster.
