Kentucky got perhaps its most important acquisition it’ll get all offseason on Tuesday when Georgia Tech transfer guard Tonie Morgan committed to the Cats. Just how important was it for Kenny Brooks to land Morgan, you may ask?

Let’s go ahead and answer that question.

Finally, Kenny Brooks has his next (great) point guard

It feels unfair to call Morgan “the Georgia Amoore replacement” because of just how good Amoore was and what kind of expectations that title could bring, but that’s essentially what Morgan is for this program.

The word “replacement” would imply that Morgan should step into the point guard position and have the same level of success that Amoore had, but that feels unrealistic. It just doesn’t seem likely that Morgan will be an AP All-American and First Team All-SEC, but hey, hopefully she is.

However, she brings experience and skill at the point guard position, and she should be a perfect suitor to be the bridge to the Maddyn Greenway era starting in 2026-27.

She fits exactly what the team needs

Can we discuss the “elephant in the room” regarding Morgan’s game — if you want to go as far as to call it that? Well, she shoots 23.5% from three-point range on her career. She’s not the best shooter in the world. However, with the way this roster is being built, she shouldn’t have to be a great shooter.

Morgan really excels at getting downhill, and on this team, that is a major, major plus. There will be players like Josie Gilvin, Asia Boone, and Lexi Blue who will all be ready to knock it down from deep if she has to kick it out on the drive, and that’s just a few of the options.

Last season, Kentucky really lacked production outside of Amoore at times. She had to will the team to a few wins here and there. There’s a solid core of talent that should allow some of the pressure to be taken off of Morgan’s shoulders. She should thrive in Lexington.

One priority down, now time to find another post player

Now that Brooks has his point guard, there is just one position that is severely lacking depth: center.

Clara Strack is the only true center on the roster since Clara Silva departed for TCU. Unless she’s going to become a super hero and play 40 minutes every single game or Brooks decides to play small ball with Teonni Key or Amelia Hassett at the five, he’s going to have to go out and get another big.

Luckily, there are a plethora of bigs left in the transfer portal.

Acquiring Morgan was absolutely imperative for Brooks and the staff. Perhaps the biggest regarding next year’s team has been answered. Now, it’s just about rounding out the roster.

Let Kenny cook.
