White, Greer and Maggard Holiday Classic Round One Results: Part Two
Three more first-round games in the White, Greer & Maggard Holiday Classic rounded out Sunday’s action as we head into round two on Monday.
Lexington Catholic def. McCreary Central 57-53
McCreary Central hung with Lexington Catholic—who was without head coach Brandon Salsman Sunday—for much of the first half before the tournament hosts erupted for a 12-0 run to extend the lead to double digits before halftime.
“You’ve got to give them (McCreary Central) credit. They really played hard and made us uncomfortable on the defensive end,” Lexington Catholic associate head coach Matt Heissenbuttel said. “They shot the ball well. They’ve got a nice team. I thought they did a good job of doing some things that really bothered us on the defensive end.”
All 15 of the Raider’s second-quarter points came from deep thanks to Trey Davis and Kyle Stephens, who combined for all five. Lexington Catholic’s Jack Gohmann led all scorers with 13 points at the break.
The Raiders kept it close in the third as well. They cut the LexCath lead all the way to four before the Knights’ seven-foot center Reece Potter tipped in a basket at the buzzer to extend their lead back to six.
McCreary Central tied the game at 53, but free throws and a dagger put-back layup by Hudson Sparks sealed the 57-53 victory for the Knights despite the Raiders’ 10 made three-pointers on the night.
“From our standpoint, I don’t feel like we played great,” Heissenbuttel said. “We certainly have to execute better offensively and hope that moving forward, we can make a few more shots and do some things better, but a win’s a win.”
Gohmann finished with 14 points while Potter followed closely behind with 12 to advance to round two of the White, Greer & Maggard Holiday Classic. Lexington Catholic will now advance to face Simon Kenton Monday at 4 p.m.
North Laurel def. Trinity 68-65
A back-and-forth first two quarters saw North Laurel take a 37-32 halftime lead into the locker room thanks to a combined 24 points from Ryan Davidson and Clay Sizemore.
Kentucky commit Reed Sheppard was held to just four points in the first half. His shooting struggles carried over into the second half as well. Thanks to Sheppard’s lack of scoring efficiency, the Shamrocks hung around to take a four-point lead into the fourth quarter.
“Credit to Trinity, they made things tough on us. Their record is nowhere indicative of who they are they are. Credit to coach [Mike] Szabo, he does an outstanding job,” North Laurel head coach Nate Valentine said.
Brody Brock nailed a three-pointer with just over one minute left in regulation to give the Jaguars a 66-63 lead. Two free throws from Davidson later and North Laurel kept their White, Greer & Maggard Holiday Classic championship hopes alive.
“That was a very big shot,” Sheppard said. “I told him to keep shooting, you’re one of the best shooters on the team … you have to keep trusting your teammates and build confidence in them.”

Davidson scored a game-high 22 points while Sheppard finished with 16 points on 6-14 (0-6 from three) shooting and six assists. Trinity was led by Cam McClain’s 17 points as well.
North Laurel will battle Pleasure Ridge Park tomorrow afternoon at 8 p.m.
Madison Central def. Bardstown 84-64
Back-to-back three-point buckets by Will Hardin gave Madison Central a 30-18 lead heading into the second quarter.
The lead remained throughout the second and Hardin notched 20 points at halftime that saw him cash in on four three-point attempts while Jayden West and Trey Skaggs combined for 18 at the break.
“Our efficiency offensively has been really good,” Madison Central head coach Allen Feldhaus said. “First, you got a bunch of guys who step out on the floor and shoot that. That helps too—but it all starts on the defensive end for us.”
The Indians blew the margin even wider in the third quarter, outscoring the Tigers 17-11 led by two three-point baskets made by Jaylen Davis on consecutive possessions. The point total only went up from there before subbing out their starters—Madison Central eventually took down the Tigers 84-64.
Hardin finished with 26 points while Skaggs ended an efficient night with 16. Davis scored four times throughout the game—all coming from deep.
“[Hardin] is just a coach’s dream. He just understands the game—knows how to play,” Feldhaus said of Hardin. “He’s one of those once in a lifetime old school-type players. I’m glad he’s on my team.”
Madison Central will advance to the second round of the White, Greer & Maggard Holiday Classic to take on Ballard Monday at 6 p.m.
