WKU Football releases Big Red uniforms and helmets

Western Kentucky has always been at the forefront of the uniform game, rocking chrome domes before it was cool while sporting alternate looks just about every other week at this point. If there has been a combination of red, white, black and silver to try from top to bottom, they’ve done it — including helmets with American flag overlays and Big Red logos representing every position group.

The Hilltoppers’ latest release, however, takes the cake. Out of the dozens upon dozens of uniforms they’ve put together over the years, none match the special edition Big Red eye helmets and jerseys to match the program’s lovable mascot.

As you can imagine, the uniforms are bright red from head to toe — including arm sleeves, gloves and cleats — with black and white pinstripes on the pants and shoulders. Then up top, you get Big Red’s iconic eyes on the side of the helmets with black facemasks, just like the inside of the mascot’s mouth.

“All eyes on us next Thursday,” the program announced ahead of its home matchup vs. UTEP on October 10 at 8 PM ET.

In the unveiling video, Big Red oversees campus and makes its way to the football stands where it is joined by star running back Elijah Young. The mascot complains that previous helmets featuring a logo of Big Red weren’t enough, and instead, they want the whole uniform.

“Big Red, we already had you on our helmets three times now,” Young says. “It’s almost like you won’t be happy unless you’re on the whole uniform.

The mascot then runs across the field to the equipment room and takes matters into its own hands, painting everything red and adding the decals representing its eyes — the program’s first official Big Red uniforms.
