[caption id="attachment_237947" align="aligncenter" width="597"] UK Athletics[/caption] Kentucky ace Zack Thompson is headed to the St. Louis Cardinals as the 19th overall pick in the first round of the 2019 MLB Draft. Thompson is now the highest-drafted pitcher in school history. This season Thompson was a standout on the bump. Thompson went 6-1 with an ERA of 2.40 in 14 starts. In 90 innings, the left-hander allowed 59 hits and only 34 walks while only allowing a stunningly low batting average of .184. Thompson ranks 11th nationally with strikeouts per nine innings with 13, as Thompson struck out 130 batters this season. Thompson also ranks third on UK’s career strikeouts list with 268 and second on the single-season list with 130, which is a new record for a left-handed pitcher. One would imagine he would have shattered that record had it not have been for an injury-plagued sophomore season, due to an elbow injury. Thomspon was named to the second-team All-SEC earlier this month, and he is currently a semifinalist for the Golden Spikes Award and Dick Howser Trophy, each of which is given to the nation’s top player.
