2022 Ponchatoula (La.) safety Jacoby Mathews announced his commitment to Texas A&M over Florida, LSU and other programs on National Signing Day, he announced on CBS Sports HQ. Mathews took an official visit to LSU last weekend.

On3 ranks Jacoby Mathews slightly higher than the industry average as the No. 19 player and No. 1 safety. He’s also an On3 Consensus top-ranked player in Louisiana.

Jacoby Mathews currently has an On3 NIL Valuation of $38,000. The NIL valuation does not act as a tracker of the value of NIL deals an athlete has completed to date. It rather signifies an athlete’s value at a certain moment in time. Mathews ranks No. 97 in the High School Football NIL Rankings.

LSU landed a pair of high school prospects on Wednesday, landing signatures from five-star Cy Park (Tex.) linebacker Harold Perkins and three-star Waxahachie (Tex.) cornerback Jaelyn Davis-Robinson.

According to the 2022 Consensus Football Team Recruiting Rankings, LSU ranks No. 12 in the country for Brian Kelly’s first class at LSU. The Tigers have landed double-digit high school recruits and transfers, helping address needs for the roster.

On3 director of scouting Charles Power compared Mathews to current New York Giants safety and former Alabama standout Xavier McKinney. Both had similar traits coming out of high school.

Xavier McKinney was a highly instinctive safety who showed outstanding recognition skills and play speed while leading his high school team to deep playoff runs as a prospect in the 2017 cycle,” Power wrote this week. “The same can be said for Jacoby Mathews. Both share similar size (6-foot-1, 195 pounds) and athleticism at the same stage, while Mathews has longer arms.

“Both McKinney and Mathews also played offense at times during their high school careers. McKinney played receiver for Roswell (Ga.) High, while Mathews saw time at quarterback and receiver at Ponchatoula (La.) High.”

Jacoby Mathews On3 Scouting Report

“High-end natural athlete with size and a thick build as a safety prospect. Explosive vertical athlete with high-end change of direction. Plays faster than he tests due to instincts and eye discipline. Covers ground, and closes angles with instinct. Plays with a physical mentality. Has maintained a safety build with the frame to carry over 220 pounds.

“Has been a jack-of-all-trades at times for Ponchatoula High playing multiple spots including quarterback, but settling in at safety as a senior. Started on both sides of the ball as a freshman. Was also an All-District level basketball player that played well above the rim.”
