BREAKING: 5-star OT Zalance Heard commits to LSU
2023 Monroe (La.) Neville offensive tackle Zalance Heard committed to LSU on Thursday, becoming commitment No. 22 for the Tigers. The 6-5.5, 305-pounder opted to stay in-state over finalists Florida, Florida State, Houston and Nebraska.
On3 ranks Heard as the No. 13 overall prospect in the nation, No. 3 offensive tackle in the country and No. 2 prospect in Louisiana. According to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies, Heard ranks as the No. 50 overall prospect and fifth-ranked offensive tackle.
LSU hosted him for its Elite Camp and then an unofficial visit after camp. That was the first opportunity Heard had to meet Brian Kelly. Offensive line coach Brad Davis, quarterbacks coach Joe Sloan and others keyed the commitment for the Tigers.
“It was great, I loved it,” Heard told The Bengal Tiger. “It was awesome meeting the new staff. They made me feel welcome, I know that much. All of them made me feel at home and already one of the players, not just a recruit. They’re real and upfront with me. I love that.”
“I like him. He’s just a cool dude, laid back,” Zalance Heard added on Kelly.
Davis worked with Zalance Heard at the camp and his style jived well with him.
“It was great. Learned a couple things from him,” Heard said. “Just a lot of different techniques and stuff. I love it (his style). That’s the type of coach I need, that’s the type of coach I like.”

Heard’s commitment only solidifies LSU’s Top 5 class, according to On3. He joins Baton Rouge (La.) Catholic wide receiver Shelton Sampson as the On3 five-star prospects in the 2023 class.

“Physically-gifted offensive tackle prospect with outstanding length and block-finishing skills. Has prototypical size at the position, measuring 6-foot-5.5, 295 pounds as a junior. Possesses elite length, with his arms checking in at 36 inches on college visits. Began his career as a defensive lineman prior to transferring to northeast Louisiana power Neville High. Played exclusively at right tackle as a junior and looks to have the highest upside at offensive tackle.
“His defensive lineman athleticism shows up by way of advanced movement skills, particularly in the run game where he’s a mauling presence. Already a dominant drive blocker in his first full season playing offensive line. Has natural upper body strength to go with his length and athleticism. Is a bit high-hipped and will need to continue playing lower. Needs to continue developing his pass set technique as he gains experience at the position.” -On3 director of recruiting Charles Power
