Ahmad Hudson knew his latest athletic feats would generate some local buzz, but had no idea just how much.
Ruston’s sophomore multisport star exploded Friday with 38 points, 21 rebounds and an increasingly viral between-the-legs dunk in the Bearcats’ 73-59 win at West Monroe to close the regular season.
“I’d never done that (dunk) in a game,” said Hudson, who holds scholarship offers from LSU in both football and basketball. “The only thing I’ve really ever done in a game was a windmill, but they were telling me to do it, so I said, ‘Why not,’ and I jumped and jumped high enough, and I did it.
“I figured it would be something big, but with me going to Ruston and not some big (national prep) school, I didn’t think it was gonna go everywhere.”

Ruston, a state semifinalist last spring, wrapped up its regular season with a 17-6 record, including 17-2 since football season ended and players such as Hudson and LSU-signed senior cornerback Aidan Anding returned to the court.
Hudson said the Bearcats are particularly hungry headed into this postseason after last year’s finish, but that he thinks the biggest difference in a potential title hunt is how cohesively and unselfishly the team is playing.

“I feel like we’re coming together as a team,” he said. “Which, that allowed me obviously to score 38 points, but it’s also my teammates making good passes and making good reads. I think it was all really just part of us coming together overall.”
Hudson earned all-state recognition in basketball as a freshman, followed up with all-state recognition in football this fall and will be in the conversation for superlatives on the court again this spring.
The 6-foot-7, 240-pound forward and tight end said the biggest strides he’s seen from himself have come in the weight room, a dynamic that has clearly shown itself in his power game on the court to go with his impressive all-around skill set.
“I think it’s really working out, because this year I’ve worked out more than I’ve ever worked out, to be honest,” he said. “I think it’s just working out when nobody’s looking, because last year I didn’t take weights as serious, but I’ve bulked up now to about 238. That’s played a huge role in getting me up to where I am.”
