Former LSU star Alex Bregman became the headline of the Major League Baseball world late Wednesday with news he would sign with the Boston Red Sox.
The longtime Houston Astros infielder agreed to a three-year deal worth $120 million that will include player opt-out opportunities after each season.
Bregman had spent his entire nine-season professional career thus far with the Astros, who selected him No. 2 overall in the 2015 MLB Draft after a decorated three-year career in Baton Rouge.
He helped lead Houston to two World Series championships and earned a pair of All-Star selections and Gold Glove, Silver Slugger, All-Star MVP and All-MLB Second-Team honors during his tenure.
Bregman holds a .272 batting average with 191 home runs, 663 runs batted in, 694 runs scores, 576 walks and on-base and slugging percentages of .366 and .483, respectively.

But teammates and coaches have consistently praised his impact as far exceeding his statistics in the box score.
Former LSU teammate Alex Lange shared his perspective with Detroit Tigers reporter Evan Woodbery, a former Saints beat writer in New Orleans now working with MLive.
“Breg’s an all-time player, man,” Lange told Woodbery. “Before I played with Miguel Cabrera, he was probably the best player I’d ever played with. His intuition for the game is second to none — he knows the game inside and out. He works his ass off, so I’m happy for him to get his money.”
Here’s a look at more reaction from media members, players, managers and front-office executives around the league late Wednesday and early Thursday to the news that Bregman would join one of its most storied franchises.
