LSU has landed a commitment from Michigan 5-star+ quarterback Bryce Underwood, who checks in as the No. 1 overall prospect in the 2025 class.

It’s a massive win on the recruiting trail for the Tigers as Underwood is tabbed as one of the highest-rated prospects to commit to LSU during the modern era of recruiting.

Underwood’s recruitment was spearheaded by LSU quarterbacks coach Joe Sloan, who was key in forging an early relationship with Underwood and his family and maintaining that through his announcement. LSU recruiting and operations analyst Patrick Kelly and LSU senior offensive analyst Dean Petzing also played key roles in recruiting Underwood and his family, as did many others on staff.

Underwood chose the Tigers over a double-digit offer list of schools from coast-to-coast, which included LSU, Michigan, Alabama, Colorado, Penn State, Oregon and Florida State as the finalists.

With the addition, the Tigers jumped Georgia and Ohio State for the No. 1 class on the On3 Industry Team Recruiting Rankings for the 2025 cycle.

LSU now has eight commitments in for the 2025 class, which includes three 5-star recruits in Underwood, running back Harlem Berry and wide receiver Dakorien Moore. All three are ranked as the No. 1 overall prospect at their position.

LSU lands a “program changing” QB to the roster

Underwood carries a 5-star+ rating, which means he’s rated as a five-star by all four of the major recruiting services.

He checks in as the No. 1 overall prospect in the country in addition to the top quarterback prospect and top recruit in Michigan.

How big is the addition? On3 Director of Scouting and Recruiting Charles Power broke down the addition with his thoughts on Underwood’s impact at LSU.

“Any time you land the top quarterback, but also a top quarterback who is the No. 1 overall prospect in a cycle, it’s program-changing addition,” Power said. “He’s a franchise-type prospect. His combination of upside and on-field resume makes for a player who not only has a potential to make an early impact in college, but has a lot of room for development.

“The talent can ultimately be a game-changer in Baton Rouge, and then a high NFL Draft pick.”

Underwood was impressive as a junior after back-to-back state title wins as a freshman and sophomore. This past season, Underwood passed for 3,165 yards and 40 touchdowns and had only two interceptions. He also rushed for seven touchdown. As a sophomore, Underwood passed for 2,751 yards and 37 touchdowns, adding eight more touchdowns on the ground. He nearly passed for 3,000 yards as a freshman at Belleville, logging 39 touchdowns to put him over 100 career touchdowns an inching closer to 9,000 career passing yards after three seasons of high school football.

Bryce Underwood Scouting Summary

On3’s Scouting and Rankings team’s take on Underwood as a prospect:

“The early top quarterback prospect in the 2025 cycle. A top arm talent and plus athlete who is among the more physically-gifted quarterback prospects in recent cycles. Measured at 6-foot-3, 210 pounds with a 10-inch hand the spring after his sophomore season. Owns a big-time arm with the ability to drive the ball with velocity to all levels of the field. Throws a very tight spiral that amplifies the velocity on the tail of his passes. Has shown advanced nuance and skill as a passer early on. Comfortable delivering over the middle of the field from within the pocket.

… Consistently sticks the ball on receivers against tight coverage. Shows the ability to layer passes with touch and high-level location. Doubles as a run threat with the ability to make defenders miss and pull away at the second level. Has a 27-1 record as as a starter over the first two years of his high school career, leading his school to back-to-back state titles. Completed 65% of his passes for 2,751 yards and 37 touchdowns as a sophomore. Also rushed for 642 yards and eight scores. Very young for the cycle with an August birthday and could technically be a 2026 prospect. Has considerable physical upside and room for continued growth.”
